Welcome to the Vygekraal estate, a private villa situated on the Garden Route near Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Perched on a cliff in the Robberg nature reserve, the 5-bedroom castle overlooks the coastline and sits at the foot of some of South Africa’s most scenic hiking trails. It’s a place where guests can forget about the outside world and get lost amongst the surrounding nature.
The Vygekraal estate provides guests with a down-to-earth, yet luxurious experience. Reconnect with nature as you explore the cliffs or simply indulge yourself while lounging in the castle.
In the early 1960′s, a wonderfully eccentric stone castle was built on a wild and dramatic sea cliff. The villa was constructed with stones borrowed from the nearby rock face and now rests on one of the most beautiful private properties in South Africa near Robberg in Plettenberg Bay. Its unique architectural design and atmosphere, along with its kilometres of isolated coastline has made Vygekraal an unforgettable landmark when visiting the Garden Route.
Whales, dolphins and seals can be spotted swimming beneath the villa’s terraces or living room windows. We also host a family of sea otters that lives in the dam alongside Vygekraal. Dassies, a type of large rabbit related – strangely enough – to elephants, dart among the rocks and baboons visit the estate from time to time, but are luckily shy to humans. Although Vygekraal harbours a variety of animal life, the estate is largely famous for its birds, particularly kestrels, brilliantly coloured nectar feeders and common sea birds.
Accessing the coastline below is an adventure in itself, as one will need to travel through an age-old cave. The Vygekraal villa is built above a vast coastal cave, which was inhabited by Stone Age men for millennia. There is a fascinating collection of artifacts from the cave on display in one of the villa’s bedrooms.
A refreshing rock pool lies beyond the cave along the estate’s coastline. Jump and swim in the seawater or scramble over the rocks and simply bathe in the sun as you watch the waves roll in. Our host, William, will also be happy to take you for a walk or take you fishing along the rocks and boulders.
Find your own rhythm in the constant ebb of the ocean and the wind.
The Villa has four master bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. All 4 master bedrooms have queen-sized beds with spacious layouts and great views. Rooms have big sliding windows to allow the ocean breeze in. Each bathroom has a bath, toilet, a shower, double vanities and heated bath rails. There are also three outdoor showers: two accessible through the bedrooms and one by the pool. All bathrooms and bedrooms have the finest quality materials, fabrics and cottons to create a luxurious and comfortable experience.
The Villa has one twin room, with two single beds, and a separate bathroom with a toilet and shower. The room faces the ocean, which apart from showcasing a breathtaking view, provides a cool morning sea breeze from the Indian Ocean.
Sitting just above the cliff, the lounge features a 180-degree view of the estate’s coastline and has relaxing couches, a fireplace and an iPod docking station. The TV room boasts a flat screen plasma TV, a DVD player with a collection of movies, satellite television, and a Bose music system with music for every occasion. The villa also has free Wi-Fi Internet access and a full set of board games.
Our fully trained host, William, will create healthy and delicious meals that will tantalize your taste buds. His specialties include fresh fish and seafood served with local vegetables. Herbs and salads are grown in our own vegetable garden, while pizzas (possibly the best this side of Italy) and Portuguese chicken are roasted in our own wood-fired pizza oven. Barbecues done on our outdoor grill is another favourite. William is a specialist in vegetarian and low-fat cooking, so you can discuss the menus with him and choose what you want to eat. The shopping and cooking for lunch and dinner are not included in the rental, but full catering can be arranged upon request. Breakfast however, is included.
The villa has its own bar inside the dining room and offers a wide range of high-quality alcohol for our guests. If we don’t stock what you are looking for, you can arrange with our staff to make the right provisions. Feel free to bring along your own drinks. No corkage is charged.
Breakfast is served when it best suits our guests. Each morning a range of breakfast choices will be made available, including fresh fruit, muesli and yogurt, eggs and bacon, along with any additional requirement that is readily available.
Every afternoon, William serves a light and healthy meal for lunch on the terraces outside the villa. A range of salads and light afternoon snacks are also available.
At night, William prepares a diverse range of dishes ranging from home made, wood-oven pizzas to self-caught seafood. Feel free to ask him to prepare any of his specialties for dinner in the castle.
The Villa comes with two full-time staff members, William and Fellen, who will oversee and attend to all your culinary and household needs.
They are the Estate’s guardians. The dogs will always try escort guests on their walks or hikes and each has their own sweet and playful character. Ask William to hear about how they arrived at Vygekraal.
The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful and popular coastal stretches in South Africa. It ranges from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape. The name comes from the ecologically diverse vegetation and the numerous lagoons and lakes found along the coast. It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley; with George, the Garden Route’s largest city and main administrative centre.
Plettenberg Bay is a premier holiday destination situated on the southeastern coast of South Africa. Plett, as it is popularly known, has sweeping golden beaches, the iconic Robberg Peninsula, intriguing lagoons and estuaries, towering indigenous forests and unpolluted rivers, along with world-class vineyards and wine estates. From Keurboomstrand to the Robberg Peninsula there are 15 kilometers of beaches only dotted by the river mouth and a small rocky island. The river, lagoon, bay and beaches provide a great platform for fishing and boating enthusiasts and offer the best shore-based whale watching in the area.
Robberg, situated 8km south of Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route, is not only a nature reserve, but also a national monument. Rocks from this region date back 120 million years to the break-up of Gondwanaland and evidence of middle and later Stone Age inhabitation has been found in a few caves along the peninsula. The reserve also extends nearly 2kms offshore, providing shelter to a range of vulnerable fish species. Visitors can expect awe-inspiring landscapes, exciting dolphin and whale sightings in season, and to be accompanied on their adventures by a variety of bird species and the occasional seal.
These rates are for the exclusive use of the entire villa for a maximum group of ten guests. However, extra accommodation without en-suite bathrooms is available on request. We recommend a three nights stay. This is let on a staffed, self-catering basis. Extra services, including full catering are available by arrangement.
